My TBR Shelf - TBR Tag and Graphs

We talk about TBR (To Be Read) piles an awful lot in the community. Some people make lists for each month of what they will read as a TBR. To me though, the TBR is all of my unread books I own and the books I hope to read someday. Personally, monthly TBRs don’t work for me, but I love to look at my list of books I own to try and decide what I should read next. Amazingly, but not surprisingly, there is a tag all about TBRs and it was so fun to do.

This post was inspired by The Perpetual Page Turner’s post from last year about TBRs. You can find her post here. She was tagged. I was not and I do not know where the tag came from originally.

How do you keep track of your TBR?

I have two methods to help me keep track of my enormous TBR. I have a shelf on Goodreads for all my owned but unread books. I also have my unread book separated out from my other books. So I have a digital and physical representation of my TBR pile. It is a constant reminder.

Is Your TBR Mostly Print of Ebook?

By a large margin my TBR is print books. While I pick up ebooks regularly, I’ve never read or purchased them as much as I do print books.

How do you determine what to read next?

I don’t? Usually I don’t end up reading what I think I want to read. It doesn’t make a lot of sense I know. I usually pick out a few books and try them all. Eventually one will stick and I will end up reading that book. I don’t have a decision making process though and TBR lists never work for me.

A book that has been on your TBR the longest

Through Wolf’s Eyes by Jane Lundskold – This was a book I bought in middle or high school on a friend’s recommendation. I spent my own money on it and I was really excited to read it. I never finished it but maybe someday I’ll finally find out what happens.

A book you recently added to your TBR pile:

In Search of Lost Dragons by Elain Black’more – I just got this in the mail this week and I am so excited to pick it up. The art already has drawn me in and I’m anxious to look at it even closer.

A book on your TBR you never plan on reading:

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy – While I’ve always wanted to read this book, it is a monster. It is so long and I’ve heard it is very confusing so I don’t know if I’ll ever make time for it.

An unpublished book on your TBR you’re most excited for:

Right now I do not have any ARCs on my TBR. I’ve gotten a few during the course of being a blogger but I haven’t received any lately.

A book on your TBR everyone had read but you:

The Giver by Lois Lowry – So many people have read this. I have read it actually but it was when I was in elementary school and I do not remember anything about the story. I want to read it again but I have no idea when I’ll get to it. I also have bad memories of the book so I hesitate to pick it up.

A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you:

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier – I’ve heard nothing but good things and recommendations about this book but I haven’t read it yet. I tried to start it this fall but only read about 50 pages. I hope to try again soon.

How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

There are two ways to look at this. I have my Goodreads “To Read” list that includes anything I’m interested in or have added for giveaways and such. This has 1078 books on it.  Whoa! That seems like a lot and I don’t know if I’ll ever knock that number down. It is the ultimate I wish I could read all the time and read all these list. My “Owned TBR” list has 211 books on it. It is still a high number and I’ve been trying all year to reduce that number to less than 200. I don’t know if that will ever happen though. It was at 237 in January so I made some progress though I’ve just bought myself some early Christmas gifts from Book Outlet….

  1. You are very brave or are made of something very tough to have a physical TBR pile. That would scare me and probably stick me in my first ever reading slump. The closest I get to is a pile of about 10 books, that I am the most eager to read, next to my bed. And even that makes life difficult, because I never know which one I am going to choose next.

Good luck getting your TBR below 200.

    1. I do run into that sometimes. Its tough to choose when I have so many choices! Maybe someday I'll get it down to a more reasonable number.

      Thanks!
